Barking Riverside – Painted Boats (1945)

Painted Boats (1945) | Barking Riverside

Charles Crichton-directed short feature for Ealing Studios which, like ‘The Bargee‘ and ‘The Water Gipsies‘ elsewhere on the map, is much admired for its depiction of the fading world on the canals. Footage includes a pair of Thames sailing barges passing Barking Power Station, Creekmouth, Essex. In fact three stations, the first construction on which began in 1897, station C was demolished in 1981 and the site has been a dormant brownfield site ever since. The opening of the Barkingside Riverside station as extension of the Overground line in 2022 is intended to lead to the construction of new housing and commercial property on the site. The station provides a link between the Overground routes and the Thames Clippers river boat service on the Thames.
