Earl’s Court – Hangover Square (1945)

Hangover Square (1945) | Earl’s Court

Based on what’s regarded widely as Patrick Hamilton’s finest novel. Set in seamy Earl’s Court, composer George Harvey Bone (Laird Cregar) suffers from amnesia and is suspected of murdering the object of his obsessions, Netta. Cregar was trying to gain public acceptance as leading man by losing weight, which he achieved with amphetamines. Filmed in sequence to accommodate Cregar’s rapid weight loss, the star was erratic. Director John Brahm resorted to having the entire cast and crew sign a statement of loyalty to Brahm, not Cregar. Just say “no”.
