Karloff (William Pratt) was born at 36 Forest Hill Road in Honour Oak. Long thought lost and now fully restored, ‘The Ghoul‘ was his first British picture after finding worldwide fame in ‘Frankenstein’, and was made during a contractual gap with Universal Pictures in Hollywood. On returning home to London, William feared his respectable Anglo Indian siblings, mostly Foreign Office civil servants, wouldn’t take to his celebrity. Instead, as he proudly recalled later, they loved it and jostled to be photographed with their infamous brother.
