Harringay Green Lanes – The Angel Who Pawned Her Harp (1954)

The Angel Who Pawned Her Harp (1954) | Harringay Green Lanes

1954 light comedy about an angel (Diane Cilento, who you last saw in ‘The Wicker Man’) who visits Earth, changing the lives of the people around her. Remade in West Germany in 1959, the plot point of an angel selling their angelic possessions to fund a life on Earth is revisited in ‘The Wings of Desire’.

One sequence is set at Harringay Green Lane greyhound racing track (built in 1927, demolished in the 1980s to make way for flats), with a shot of its famous Julius totalisator. A 1937 attempt to introduce cheetah racing to the stadium failed after two attempts when the cheetahs declined to chase the lure. The track was long associated with organised crime, with Joe Corral – founder of Corral’s bookmakers – said to have once held a gun to the stomach of powerful mob boss Darby Sabini.
