Kilburn High Road – Gaumont State Cinema Opening Day (1937)

Gaumont State Cinema Opening Day (1937) | Kilburn High Road

Best known for its association for Ian Dury’s band Kilburn and The High Roads, the Gaumont State opened in 1937 with a lavish ceremony and crowds spilling out onto the street. It was one of the largest theatres in Europe and took the ‘State’ part of its name from the Empire State building in New York, on which its imposing Art Deco tower is modelled.
