Slough – Hell Drivers (1957)

Hell Drivers (1957) | Slough

Stanley Baker plays an ex-con who tries to go straight but is thwarted when he takes a driver’s job at a corrupt haulage company. The film features scenes filmed around Berkshire and Slough’s canal system. Network Distributing brought out a sumptuous Blu-ray in 2017, which includes a documentary revisiting the locations in ‘Hell Drivers’.

Slough is portrayed in cinema and poetry (the David Brent film, Betjeman’s poem) as a disaster of misguided Modernism, but it’s also an important ‘no questions asked’ transit point for goods and people between Reading and London. Slough is a lacuna of concrete and shadows surrounded by beautiful countryside, picturesque villages and stately homes, which have provided locations for numerous films.
