A schoolgirl looks for an angel costume so she can appear in a school play. Ken Russell went to Walthamstow Technical College on Hoe Street and then got work as a freelance photographer. Mercedes Quadros who played Amelia was the daughter of a Uruguayan diplomat and met Russell via a friend. She fell during filming at the Albert Memorial and broke her hand so is holding it away from the camera during the film. Amelia gets on the Piccadilly line in the film at South Kensington station. ‘Amelia and the Angel’ was his second completed short, and attracted the attention of Huw Wheldon who offered Russell a job on the ‘Monitor’ programme at the BBC on the strength of it. “It’s just a nice story, that’s all,” said Russell, later.
